Great to hear about your Time Machine restoration success. I wasn't as unfortunate as you when I decided to reinstall everything on my Intel Mac Mini, as my hard drive was fine, just my installation needed a clean slate as it contained information from two Migration Assistant sessions ago, one of them being from my old PowerBook G4.

Rather than use Time Machine (my TM drive enclosure actually decided to continuously invalidate its hard drive each time you went to mount it), I tried just using SuperDuper on a bootable pocket drive I had lying around. It's actually pretty neat, although longer to restore as it's a manual process, even if just for the added security of having a bootable drive available that you could boot into while holding down the Opt key.

The scariest part for me actually was the reimporting of mailboxes into Apple Mail (another opportunity to clean out the crap that I had accumulated there) and my iTunes setup, as I was concerned whether my iPhone would still sync nicely as opposed to wiping itself clean, and therefore losing all my contacts as well. But this all went well without a hitch for me.

As for the Apache example files, are you not using the Sites folder in your home account instead?
