Rest in peace Darren

September 27th, 2007 by Raj

Tonight my Mum informed me that my next-door neighbour of 18 years in Port Lincoln, Darren Mavromatis has passed away.

Darren was five years older than me and for the majority of my childhood I looked up to him as if he were a legend. I’m sure at times I was an annoyance to him, waking him up at ridiculous hours on a Saturday morning to play cricket or use his computer, but Darren never protested and always looked after me.

I will never forget how Darren was like a big brother to me, he put me in pads to face my first real cricket ball, taught me how to lean when finishing a sprinting race, we’d saw open his Dad’s golf balls so we could get the super ball out of the middle and he grew my passion for art by teaching me how to draw.

After he left Port Lincoln we lost touch but have seen each other from time to time since always remaining a good friend to me. Darren, you will be truly missed, you’ve been taken from us all far too young and I regret not seeing you more often.

To Aunty Nita, Angie and Kylie my deepest condolences, my heart goes out to you all.

Rest in peace my friend, you will be sorely missed.

I knew Darren for years when we both lived in Port Lincoln and then Adelaide. He was a fantastic fun loving person with a huge heart. He was the most energetic person I have ever known. I was so happy to hear that he had found true love and someone he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. She is a very lucky lady. My heart goes out to her in this time of great tragedy. Also I would like to express my condolences to Darren’s family. I know how much he adored you all. I have not been in contact with Mav for a few years now. Things change and people move on but he will always have a special place deep within my heart. I will always remember the wonderful times we had together.
If possible could someone please contact me on the above email address and tell me what happened to him? I only know he passed away from the obituaries in the newspaper. It would be very much appreciated.
Rest in peace Darren, you will always be remembered.

I grew up with Mavro. As fourteen year olds we did cross country running (of all things). He’d remember competing in the cross country sprints up at Wudinna. Later on, as young entreprenuers, we made some good money doing boundary umpiring for the B and A grade football in Lincoln. Following that, it was the battle between who had the fastest car (something that at the time, all 17 year olds wanted to prove). He had a grumbling LH Torana, and i had a Toyota Celica hatchback with a supercharged 2 litre.

Darren, you were a friend when i needed one, and im glad we had the time together. I haven’t seen you in 10 years, but i was very moved to hear that you had passed, and my thoughts are with you and your mum, dad and sister.
Rest in peace mate. Love Tod Pedler.

Kerrie, from what i know (and i can’t bring myself at this stage to call his parents) he was exercising at a gym in Vietnam when he collapsed. He passed away on the way to the hospital. The news is that he died from an enlarged heart.

Thank you very much Tod for letting me know. I have been going crazy not knowing. He was an amazing person and will be sorely missed.
